When Form Four students at SMK Bukit Indah first suggested turning the empty land behind their school canteen into a garden, many teachers doubted the idea would last. The soil was hard, the area flooded after heavy rain, and nobody had any experience of farming. The students began by researching simple solutions online and interviewing a retired agriculture officer who lived nearby. On his advice, they built raised beds from recycled wooden pallets so that the plants would stay above the floodwater. They also collected rainwater in old drums, which meant the garden did not increase the school’s water bill. Within a year, the garden was producing kangkung, chillies and lemongrass, which the canteen bought at a fair price. The money was used to buy seeds and tools, so the project paid for itself. More importantly, students who rarely spoke in class found themselves leading groups of younger pupils during gardening sessions. Not everything went smoothly. A caterpillar attack destroyed almost half of the first crop, and some volunteers lost interest during the examination period. Yet the club adapted: they planted marigolds to keep pests away and created a rota so that the work was shared fairly. Today, the “Canteen Garden” is proof that a small idea, carried out patiently, can change a whole school.
